For Hire
Hello there! I am on the market and officially looking for my next opportunity.
If you think I would be a good fit for your next project or for your organization, then keep reading to see what I’m looking for, then contact me using the link below.
(Special thanks to Julie Pagano, Brenna Flood, and Andy Pressman — their “for hire” pages inspired me to do this for myself.)
Who are you?
I am a designer, creative producer, content manager, strategist, and editorial leader with over 20 years of professional and entrepreneurial experience that spans the technology, design, publishing and media industries.
In addition to that, I’ve managed large-scale, long-term creative projects, I’ve built and led creative teams, I’ve produced podcasts, I’ve directed videos, I’ve designed zines and magazines, I’ve edited online and print publications, I’ve made audio mixes…I have done a lot.
I am also a thought leader in the design community through my writing, speaking, podcasting, advocacy, and community work. I have a wealth of non-technical skills developed over years of running my own studio, leading distributed teams, and mentoring other creatives.
While I’m defining who I am, I think it’s just as important to define who I am not, to save confusion (and perhaps embarrassment).
I am not a traditional marketer.
I am not a UX designer or UI/UX designer.
I am not a salesperson / seller / account executive.
I am not a product designer or product manager or product owner.
I am not a coder, software developer, software engineer, or any type of computer programmer.
My LinkedIn profile will give you a summarized overview of my work experience, education, and more. You could also check out my Plum profile or my CliftonStrengths Top 5 or my bio and tab through the various sections on my website to see projects I’ve done, awards I’ve won, events where I’ve spoken, endorsements from colleagues and industry experts…you get the drift. I’m not going to repeat all that stuff here — those pages tell that information in much more detail. I’m more interested in learning about who you are and what you do.
Or you could listen to these lovely AI-generated voices give you a deep dive into my creative career. (It’s pretty good!)
What are you looking for?
This is the fun part! I’m open to a lot of different opportunities right now — freelance or contract work — but there are a few qualities that are important to me regardless of where I end up.
Good people. I want to know about your team or organization’s culture — that is very important to me, and should be important to you as well. Before I accept an offer, I’ll want to meet and talk with some of the people I will directly work with. Also, as a Black person, it is absolutely important that I talk to other Black people there — preferably on the team I am working on — so I can determine whether your setup is a psychologically safe place for Black people to work. (I would really prefer not to be your team’s or organization’s first Black and/or BIPOC employee. It’s 2025 and I’m tired of making history in that kind of way.)
Transparency. I expect management and other team members to “work in public”, meaning that notes and other documents regarding processes, decisions, and such are shared company-wide in a project management tool like Notion or Trello or something like that. I also expect for management to be direct with employees about the overall health of the company, particularly as it relates to financial longevity. As professional adults with families and children, we’re all aware of the greater political and socio-economic issues of this country and the world at large. Talk openly and honestly about how this affects the work we do, the products we create, how the business will continue, etc. I am extremely adept at reading the room and seeing the signs that determine the state of a company, but I don’t want to be Sherlock Holmes, you know? I’d rather put my brain to use doing interesting work.
Interesting work. I have a lot of skills, and I’d prefer to work in a team or organization where I can put as many of those to use as possible doing something cool. (Coolness is subjective, of course.) While my work has largely been with tech businesses, I am very interested in seeing how I can apply my skills to non-tech businesses as well. Or maybe in doing more hands-on visual design work. Or maybe even some podcast work! I want places where I can learn and grow, but I am not trying to learn code or grow into becoming a software developer or learn your sales tools and end-to-end sales process for a non-sales position.
Equitable compensation. This should go without saying, but I am looking for opportunities that provide compensation commensurate with my experience, education, and the quality and level of my work. My annual salary requirements begin at $100,000. I don’t really care about titles but I do know that titles are what other organizations use to try and categorize you and that they can differ in scope and task from company to company. Just don’t give me some weird dotcom-era title like “Chief BBQ Taster” or whatever.
There are also some other things that I’m looking for out of my next opportunity:
Flexible work schedule. My work day is generally from 8am - 5pm ET (GMT-4), and I have worked with teams and organizations that are between GMT-8 and GMT+2. That being said, I would prefer to work within U.S. time zones (GMT-8 to GMT-4). I work Monday-Friday, though if your team or organization does four-day work weeks, I’m cool with that. I do not work late nights or weekends.
Minimal, optional travel. Heavy on the optional. I have never been a fan of offsites, onsites, revenue kick-offs, sales kick-offs…the only kick-off I like is in the box seat of a stadium with a cold beer in one hand and hot food in the other. I would prefer a role with no required travel unless the travel is local to Atlanta.
Team/organization size. I’ve worked on teams as small as a dozen people and in companies with 10,000+ employees. I work best with midsize to large stable organizations. Tiny, early stage startups (50 people or less) have generally not been a good fit for me, based on my past experiences. (Feel like yours is different? Let’s chat about it.)
Type of work. I am looking for a senior-level, hands-on individual contributor creative role on a design team or within an organization with a strong design culture.
I realize this sounds a little vague, so here are some of the titles of roles I would be interested in doing:Creative Content Manager
Creative Project Manager
Design Program Manager
Marketing Program Manager
Creative Producer
This is not an exhaustive list — I’m also open to making my own role within your team or organization based on your needs! Let’s get creative.
In the past, I have been a creative working on marketing teams within tech startups. This is good for interesting work, but horrible for management and career leveling — if you think your team or organization is different from this, I would like to hear how. Also, at my level of experience, I expect my role to have some level of autonomy and leadership.
Culture. This is more than just having good people. Does your team or organization value communication and collaboration? Does your company value employees having a strong work/life balance? Can I work on projects in my non-work time unrelated to the business? I thrive best in ROWEs — results-only work environments. As a former jazz musician, I dig a work culture that’s like playing a gig — we practice together, we go perform, and then we do our own thing afterwards.
Lastly, here are some nice-to-have things that will definitely boost this next opportunity, in my eyes:
Unlimited PTO (and a push by the team or company to use it).
Unlimited sick leave.
Paid health benefits (mostly or 100%, including vision and dental coverage).
401K match.
A home office setup budget.
A professional development budget.
When can you start?
I am ready to start at least one week after signing a formal offer.
This will give me enough time to tie up any loose ends with my current clients and other obligations. (This is subject to change given the state of the U.S. job market, the U.S. economy, and the world.)
Where are you located?
I am located in Atlanta, Georgia, and I am looking exclusively to join remote / distributed-first teams or organizations.
I am not opposed to joining any Atlanta-based teams or organizations, but I have worked remotely since 2008 — that’s twice as long as I’ve worked in an office. I might be interested in a hybrid situation if you are located ITP.
I am not interested in relocation, but if you’re paying for it, I’m open to a conversation about it.
Why are you doing a “for hire” page?
As my LinkedIn profile shows, I bring a lot of skills and experience to the table. So why a “for hire” page? Because working in as many different contexts as I have means I’ve done a lot of things and have taken some interesting twists and turns which might not fit into a “standard career path” or map point-by-point to a carefully-crafted job listing. This page adds some rich context to my career experience and communicates that to people and companies who want to work with me.
How can I reach you?
If you read through all this and I sound like a good fit for what you’re looking for, then let’s chat! I respond to all legitimate messages within 24 hours. Talk with you soon! 👋🏾
