Mayor’s Summer Reading Club

The Mayor's Summer Reading Club in Atlanta is an initiative designed to encourage children and teens to read during the summer months, promoting literacy and a love for books through engaging activities and incentives.

About

The Mayor’s Summer Reading Club is a landmark collaborative initiative uniting GEEARS, the City of Atlanta, and numerous community partners. Its mission is to combat summer learning loss by fostering a lifelong love of reading in children from birth through age eight. Each year, the club selects three engaging books and hosts a series of public readings and enriching events, creating a city-wide movement around literacy and education.

The Work

My role was to establish the brand from the ground up, providing the foundational visual identity that would define the club for years to come. I designed the original logo, a symbol that captured the program’s joy and mission, and created the core program materials for the first few years. This work provided the initiative with a professional, cohesive look that made it instantly recognizable and appealing to families, partners, and the public.

Conclusion

By establishing a strong and inviting brand identity, my work was instrumental in making the Mayor’s Summer Reading Club a cherished and enduring tradition. The program’s logo and visual language gave it the weight and professionalism needed to attract corporate sponsors and community buy-in, ensuring its continued success. This creative foundation helped transform a vital initiative into a beloved and iconic annual event that has directly contributed to the literacy of thousands of Atlanta's children.
